Application process

All currently-registered UIS History graduate students are eligible, as are currently-registered UIS undergraduate History majors who intend to apply for departmental honors. Awards of up to $3,000 may support 1) travel to access primary source material; 2) subscriptions or other purchases essential to a research project; and/or 3) travel funds to present research at academic conferences. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. The Department Awards Committee will begin review of applications on February 16, 2025, with notifications soon after. Funded activities must be completed by June 2025.

Complete applications will include:

  1. A current curriculum vitae or resume
  2. A project description (500 to 750 words), including a description of activities and what benefit the applicant expects to derive from the award. Applicants should also ideally have obtained permission from the archives and/or libraries they wish to visit in order to work there during the period covered by the award. Requests for funds for conference presentations should include confirmation of applicant's participation for the conference.
  3. An itemized budget
  4. An unofficial current UIS transcript, or copy of DARS report
  5. One confidential letter of recommendation from a UIS faculty member, emailed directly to the History Department Chair via UIS Protected Attachment Repository (PEAR) system.

The materials can be left in the History Department Chair's mail folder in UHB 3050 in a sealed envelope, or submitted via email to his@uis.edu via the UIS Protected Attachment Repository (PEAR) system. Any questions should be directed to the Department Chair.
