First Spring Tournament Success
SPRINGFIELD, IL (February 15, 2021) – The UIS Speech and Debate Team achieved some excellent scores in their first competition of the spring semester. The competition was hosted by Southwest Minnesota State University as part of the Online Asynchronous Tournament Series (OATS).
Sophomore Lisette Cortes-Benitez entered informative speaking at the tournament. Judges noted that they learned a lot from her speech which describes the Supreme Court case Mendez vs. Westminster, a predecessor of the Brown vs. Board decision. The comments from these judges will be incorporated into the speech in preparation for future competitions.
University of Illinois Springfield Speech and Debate Team is committed to training the next generation of civic leaders, public speakers, and communicators who are passionate about effecting change in their communities. Students who are interested in joining the team should reach out to the coach Timothy Bill (tbill2@uis.edu) or check out the team website.
