Health Services does not provide medical excuses for missed classes, exams, assignments, or work on/off campus. The decision for our policy is based on our limited resources, which are better dedicated to providing health care; the inability for us to make valid determinations about illnesses or injuries students may have managed through self care at home; and our commitment to student privacy.
This policy is similar to other major universities and is consistent with the recommendations of the American College Health Association. An informational letter explaining Health Services policy is available from the Health Services. Some students find it useful in communicating the policy to faculty who have requested a medical excuse.
In the event that you do need to miss class due to an illness, injury or an emergency, Health Services recommends that you contact your professor if possible, before the class or exam takes place. You should speak with him/her in person, or via phone or email. If you are unable to reach your professor, be sure to leave your contact information (telephone number and email) so that s/he can reach you. All decisions about the impact of your absence on your grade, as well as any arrangements for making up work, rest with your instructor.
Students who have a communicable disease, such as mumps, chickenpox, influenza, meningitis, etc. are asked to communicate that information to Health Services by e-mail at: uishealthservice@uis.edu. In that event, communication with your instructor may be necessary, with your permission.
