The following is an excerpt from a story that appeared in The State Journal-Register on Aug. 16, 2022.
A new chancellor is on board at the University of Illinois Springfield as students head back to class on Friday.
Among those greeting first-year students at move-in day at Lincoln and Founders residence halls at UIS Tuesday will be Janet Gooch, who officially took over the top spot on July 1.
Gooch spent her career at Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri, before succeeding Susan Koch, who served as chancellor for nine years before retiring in 2020. Karen Whitney was in an interim role for two years.
UIS's new leader, a runner and triathlete who has competed three times in the Boston Marathon and is preparing for a third New York City Marathon, will face challenges of a different kind on campus.
