WHAT: The University of Illinois Springfield presents the 13th annual Student Technology, Arts & Research Symposium (STARS). The two-day event showcases student research and creative activities during the academic year. Events are free and open to the public, except for the theatre performance for which tickets must be purchased.
WHEN: 5-8 p.m. Thursday, April 11 and 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 12
WHERE: UIS Student Union, 2251 Richard Wright Drive, and online
DETAILS: UIS undergraduate and graduate students will present their research and creative works through short talks, poster presentations and art exhibitions. The symposium gives the community a chance to see the quality and variety of work being done by students at UIS. It also gives businesses the opportunity to network with potential new talent.
Thursday, April 11
- Students will launch the next edition of the UIS literary journal, The Violet Margin, from 5-6 p.m. online.
- Online student presentations will take place from 6-8 p.m.
Friday, April 12
- Check-in and registration will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom.
- Student oral presentations will occur from 9-11 a.m. in the Student Union classrooms on the second floor.
- The posters and art exhibition will take place from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom.
- Keynote speaker Mar Hicks, historian of technology and associate professor of data science at the University of Virginia, will speak at 1:30 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom on “Connecting Computing’s History with the Present.” Hicks specializes in investigations of how gender and sexuality change what we think we know about technological progress and the global “computer revolution.”
- The outstanding master’s thesis award will be presented from 2:30 to 3 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom, after which student awards for the best poster, presentation and art piece will be presented.
- Faculty will be honored with awards for their mentorship of students at 3:15 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom.
- UIS Theatre will present the play “John Proctor is the Villain” at 7:30 p.m. in the Studio Theatre on the lower level of the Public Affairs Center. Tickets can be purchased here.
