What was your overall UIS experience like?
My experience was life changing. I learned so much about myself and other people around me. UIS allowed me to explore so many avenues of my creativity within my major that added to my success today. I was involved in SOFA, Kinky Curly Hair Club, The Journal Student Newspaper, and Necessary Step Mentor program. I truly developed my character and identity on that campus, and used every resource available to me to make me the woman I am today.
Do you have any fond memories of your time at UIS you'd like to share?
One cherished memory from my time at UIS is chartering the Tau Chi chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc on campus. This milestone played a pivotal role in shaping Black history and excellence at the university, offering a platform for women keen on Black Greek Letter Organizations to witness a beacon of Black culture and leadership. Introducing Greek Life to UIS contributed to the ongoing necessity for diversity and inclusion on campus.
Why did you choose UIS?
I chose UIS not only for its world-renowned University of Illinois degree but also for the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on campus. The administrators and program facilitators, like Dr. Ford and Monique Williams, empowered me to grow personally and professionally. Building lifelong connections and friendships at UIS affirmed that I made the right decision.
What has your career path been like? How did you end up where you are?
Originally, I aspired to be a news reporter and journalist, drawing inspiration from Ann Strahle, my professor at UIS. Her unwavering dedication to the field, coupled with her exceptional critique and mentorship, greatly influenced me. Under her guidance, my writing, communication skills, and storytelling flourished. It was through this mentorship that I discovered my passion for storytelling, crafting narratives that resonate with others through various media channels.
Back in 2012, social media was on the rise as a primary source for news and updates. Taking on my first role as a social media intern at the Career Center at UIS, I fell in love with the ability to convey messages persuasively, encouraging others to engage with our content. This experience paved the way for me to create the UIS Connection website, a project initiated by the Diversity Center under the leadership of Jeanie Mingeaud. The website continues to serve as a valuable resource for students seeking connections and campus opportunities.
Leveraging my portfolio from UIS, I secured my initial marketing position in Chicago. Fast forward a decade, I now work in Social Media both as an employee and as a freelance consultant through my own LLC, NR Media Agency.
How did your UIS education prepare you for your career?
UIS equipped me for my career by enabling me to explore all facets of the communications department. I delved into diverse courses including creative writing, design, news reporting, journalism, public relations, and advertising. This comprehensive experience positioned me as a versatile marketer with expertise across various realms in digital marketing.
Do you have any cool hobbies/side projects you'd like to tell us about?
As a social media influencer under my brand, THEE NATALIE ROCHELLE, I dedicate myself to educating my followers on entrepreneurship, business marketing, and personal finance. Also, I provide freelance marketing consultancy services, specializing in social media and brand management for small businesses.
What are some life lessons you'd like to share with current students?
One life lesson I would love to share with current students is try everything. Whatever interest you have, try it. Learn about it and educate yourself on it. Always be a student. There is nothing on this earth that you can say you're too good enough to learn. Everything is a learning opportunity and a reason for you to gain knowledge and wisdom. Also, be true to yourself. Be okay with being different. Different is what makes you stand out as a leader. Never let anyone dim your light, and always follow your dreams.
