Emiquon 2024 Trip a Success!

On October 23rd, UIS colleagues traveled to the Emiquon Nature Preserve for a Know Your U experience. Participants toured Therkildsen Field Station with Dr. Tom Rothfus and Christa Christensen to learn about the many functions of the research field station. Following the tour, they explored the public use areas of the Nature Preserve, learning about the history of the area, environmental changes, as well as the wildlife native to the area. To conclude the visit, participants collected water samples to view under the facility’s high-quality microscopes, examining life at the tiniest level.

We are excited to have hosted another successful trip to Emiquon and hope to share this university gem with even more participants next year and beyond.

Gift Ban Reminder

As we learn in our Ethics Training each year, the Gift Ban provision of the State Officials and Employees Ethics Act prevents university employees from accepting gifts from a prohibited source.  If you attend conferences, give presentations or travel on official university business where another entity offers to pay for all or part of the expenses, you may be able to accept these expenses being paid or waived by a prohibited source under the Educational Materials and Missions (EMM) exception to the Gift Ban.  You must apply for an EMM exception and obtain advance approval from the Ethics Officer.  More information on the EMM exception, including the form to submit when applying for this exception, can be found on the University Ethics and Compliance Office website.

Employee Development Series
November 2024 Session

Please join us for the next installment of the monthly Employee Development Series: Violence Prevention & De-Escalation Training with Captain Justin Emmons. Attendees will leave this session with new knowledge on identifying different types of disruptive, concerning or criminal behaviors, how to be a good witness, and the do’s and don’ts of incident involvement. Important topics such as stress responses and the escalation continuum will be covered as well alongside crisis intervention tools to use within a de-escalation framework. The impacts of a trauma-informed approach will be highlighted throughout the session. Come join us to learn about enhancing your skills and knowledge to maintain a safe campus community.

The Employee Development Series is open to all faculty and staff, and this session will be held on November 20, 2024, from 9:00-11:00AM in the Student Union Ballroom. Please use the link below to register to attend.
