Good afternoon!

Copyleaks just notified UIS that they will release an updated version of their AI detection model on Tuesday, November 19, 2024.

They state, “Our algorithm has been refined to better identify the ever-changing landscape of generative AI content. With this change, you will likely notice more reports with positive AI results. Additionally, scanning the same document before and after this change will likely lead to different results.”

COLRS recommends using any AI detection results as a conversation starter with students rather than definitive proof of the use of generative AI, as these detectors can be biased and inaccurate.

Copyleaks has provided a support article and video about their new AI Insights tool, which explains how to read the reports. The tool provides a probability of whether a particular phrase is more likely to be AI generated or human generated. When using this tool, it is important for instructors to assess the whole of the work in the context of their discipline and other student writing samples. The AI detector flags phrases that are common in technical and professional writing.
