Dear Faculty and Staff:

We are honored to welcome the Illinois House of Representatives to UIS on Wednesday, Jan. 8, for the ceremonial opening of the 104th General Assembly. During this historic event, all 118 House members will take their oaths of office in Sangamon Auditorium. This marks the ninth time UIS has had the privilege of hosting this prestigious ceremony.

To ensure a smooth experience for the House members, their guests and other dignitaries, parking adjustments will be necessary:

  • Parking lots C-North, C-South, D, E, and the PAC Teardrop lot will be closed to UIS staff, faculty, and students on Jan. 8. These lots will be blocked off beginning at 6 a.m.

Additionally, SMTD bus service will operate on a reduced schedule, with service limited to the bus shelter near Founders Residence Hall at Eliza Farnham and Vachel Lindsay Drive between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The inauguration is expected to draw over 2,000 attendees, including House members, statewide elected officials and other distinguished guests. Please note the following details regarding event access:

  • The Illinois House has reserved the Sangamon Auditorium and Studio Theatre for the ceremony.
  • Admission is by ticket only, and attendees must pass through security screening to enter the venue. Unfortunately, there will be no general admission for UIS staff, faculty or students.
  • The Illinois Senate's swearing-in ceremony will take place separately at the State Capitol.

I want to extend my gratitude to the UIS staff supporting this event and to the entire campus community for your cooperation and understanding. Hosting events of this magnitude underscores our role as a vital part of Illinois’ public and civic life.

Thank you for your support,

Janet
