What was your overall UIS experience like?

My experience at UIS taught me the basics for how to be a journalist. I gained so much knowledge inside and outside of the classroom. Whether it was my internship at WUIS, working for the UIS Observer or the many journalism classes I took, I learned so much. I am forever grateful for the foundational knowledge I gained.

Do you have any fond memories of your time at UIS you'd like to share?

I remember joking back and forth with Richard Bailey before one of Dr. Strahle's classes. Despite being two of the oldest students in the class we had fun like children.

Why did you choose UIS?

I chose UIS because it was affordable, close and they had a transfer agreement with Lincoln Land Community College.

What has your career path been like?

My career path has been non-traditional. I worked in radio without a degree. I dropped out of school. The pandemic happened and I realized I wanted to finish what I started. UIS gave me the opportunity to get back into radio with more experience and a degree. I then went to Northwestern for my master's degree in journalism. Now I've been in Tulsa for half a year covering stories that matter to Tulsans.

How did your UIS education prepare you for your career?

I couldn't be where I am at now without UIS. They give non-traditional students like myself a chance to blossom. I'm a first generation college graduate. I grew up on food stamps. UIS still accepted me with open arms. They also gave me an incredible journalism education that in my opinion was better than Northwestern, which is one of the top programs in the country. The professors are hands on, caring and at the top of their game. The passion and professionalism of UIS professors is second to none.

Do you have any cool hobbies/side projects you'd like to tell us about?

I do stand up comedy. I will start producing a monthly show in Tulsa in March. I'm working my way up in the Tulsa scene. When I lived in Chicago during my master's program I was paid to perform at Zanies and The Comedy Bar. Now I get to bring laughs to Tulsa.

What are some life lessons you'd like to share with current students?

Never be afraid to ask a question. Be bold enough to raise your hand and answer a question. The safe choice isn't always the best choice. Constantly challenge yourself to get better at what you do, even if it is difficult.
