Figuring out how to pay for college can be challenging. But there are resources to help! The FAFSA, scholarships, grants and programs like the Prairie Promise can help make college more affordable. Students can significantly reduce their expenses by exploring financial aid options. Financial aid is available from the University of Illinois Springfield, federal and state programs, and outside private scholarships. First-year UIS student Evelyn Martinez explored all these options to become a Prairie Star.
Evelyn is a social work major from Chicago. She grew up in a low-income family and knew that attending college might not be possible without financial aid. Thankfully, her high school participated in a program called OneGoal. OneGoal dedicates itself to preparing students for collegiate success. Through that program, Evelyn discovered the financial aid opportunities that have helped her pursue higher education.
"Financial aid made college more accessible for someone like me. ... It relieved the stress, allowing me to focus on my studies and life as a college student."
Evelyn received three grants: the Pell Grant, the Illinois MAP Grant, and the UIS AIM HIGH Grant. She also a recipient of the President’s Award and Prairie Promise. These awards not only reduced her tuition costs but also solidified her decision to attend UIS. Evelyn intends to make the most of this opportunity. “With this support, I’ll use [my degree in social work] to help different communities. I also hope to advocate for and educate youth about financial aid opportunities.”

Without financial aid, Evelyn believes attending college would have been nearly impossible.
"To be frank, without financial aid, college would have been a passing thought. ... Paying off student loans would have been one of my biggest challenges. I also think concentrating on my studies and having stability would have been difficult."
