Enjoy a beverage from our concession stand while experiencing skilled local artists sharing their work in the intimate UIS StudioTheatre. These short events will leave you with time for dinner afterwards to make for a great date night!
Join poet Shatriya Smith, local community advocate and Executive Director of the Garvey-Tubman Cultural Arts and Research Center, alongside several other poets in a spoken word performance event that will celebrate the art form of performing original poetry. A native of Springfield, Mrs. Smith and the Garvey-Tubman Cultural Arts and Research Center have been hosting a series of “Underground Railroad”-themed poetry events across central Illinois for the past several months. Some of the poetry featured at this Date Night event will build on the Underground Railroad poetry themes, utilizing words such as escape, chains, and redemption.
