This month is Black History Month, a federally recognized celebration of African American history and culture. 

A variety of events are scheduled in the Springfield area — especially at the University of Illinois Springfield and Lincoln Land Community College — highlighting the observance that began Feb. 1.

Tuesday, Feb. 1- Step Afrika!

Step Afrika! blends percussive dance styles practiced by historically African American fraternities and sororities, traditional African dances and an array of contemporary dance and art forms into a cohesive, compelling artistic experience.

Monday, Feb. 7 - Addressing Sexual Health Inequities in the Black Community.

The mission of the event is to increase awareness of the structural and societal inequities that lead to sexual health disparities in the Black community. 

Thursday, Feb. 10 - Titans in Rock: Musicians throughout the Ages.

This event will discuss the evolution of rock, from its roots in music to its expansion into different demographics.
