Dear Campus Community:

On Sept. 29, you received an email regarding the 2023 Annual Security and Fire Safety Report, also referred to as the Clery Report. It is important that you take time to review the information in this report, which provides valuable information about:

  • security policies for the campus
  • to whom a crime or other emergency should be reported
  • how the university will communicate with you in the event of a serious crime or other emergency that poses a threat to the health or safety of our community
  • the crime prevention, security awareness, sexual misconduct, and other safety and security-related education programs offered by various UIS departments
  • the university’s policies, procedures, and response to reports of sexual misconduct
  • procedures that are in place if a residential student is reported to be missing
  • fire safety policies, fire drills, and fire evacuation procedures
  • statistics regarding residential facility fires

Each student and employee can help to promote a safe campus by doing the following:

  • Participate in the various safety and security-related education programs provided by the university.
  • Read all safety and security-related communications distributed by the university and follow any instructions or crime prevention tips they contain.
  • If you are the victim of or witness to a crime, report it promptly to the campus police emergency line at 217-206-7777 or a campus security authority (CSA), who will fill out a Campus Security Authority crime reporting form with you that is reviewed for consideration of community safety messaging and crime statistics, depending on the report.
  • Participate in the various safety and security-related education programs provided by the University.
  • Read all safety and security-related communications distributed by the University and follow any instructions or crime prevention tips they contain.
  • If you know someone who was the victim of a crime, encourage them to report it promptly to the campus police emergency line at 217-206-7777 or a CSA or to one of the following departments to seek guidance and assistance:
    • Access and Equity Office/Title IX Coordinator 217-206-6222
    • Dean of Students Office 217-206-8211
  • If you are the victim of any form of Sexual Misconduct, report it immediately to the campus police at 217-206-7777 and to the Title IX Coordinator at 217-206-6222.
  • If you become aware of a residential student who might be missing, immediately contact campus police at 217-206-7777 so they can attempt to locate the student and initiate an investigation.
  • If you see evidence of a fire that has already been extinguished in an area where it may not have set off a fire alarm (e.g., you see evidence that someone lit a trashcan on fire, you see evidence of a piece of paper on a bulletin board that was set on fire, etc.), immediately contact campus police at 217-206-7777 so that the incident can be documented and investigated.

Thank you,

UIS Clery
