Can you tell us a bit about your background and what inspired you to pursue your current career path?
I have always loved storytelling. As a young person, I loved performing arts, and then in college, I enjoyed studying communication. This led me to the Hoogland Center for the Arts where I spent 10 years of my career learning the ins and outs of managing a performing arts organization. I recognized that it takes not only talent but also business savvy to foster the arts. This led me to consider a master’s degree in business administration.
At the same time, I was spending my free time podcasting with friends about our shared love of Disney. A surprise to all of us occurred when Disney stars began to say “yes” to joining us on our podcast “Beyond the Mouse.” We have since spoken to celebrities like Idina Menzel, C-3PO actor Anthony Daniels and the directors of the hit film “Encanto.” Then, an opportunity opened up at NPR Illinois, my favorite radio station, where I could not only use my podcasting experience to share stories from my community but also pursue my graduate degree. It’s been nearly four years, and I still love my job, the people I meet and the stories we share.
Who or what has been your biggest influence or mentor in your journey?
The biggest influence on me has been my experience in the performing arts. It’s where I found my voice and confidence as a leader. It taught me how to work with people with different backgrounds and opinions other than my own. I’ve also learned skills like negotiation, time management and how to simply get things done. Many see the stage as a place for singing and dancing, but the richness of the theatre experience offers much more than what an audience can see.
What are your goals and aspirations for the future?
At this moment in time, I am focused on perfecting my daily practice of skill building and learning. As the adage goes, “Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.” I don’t know what the future holds, but I am preparing for the opportunities that await me.
What advice would you give to others who are looking to advance and make a difference in their field?
I would encourage others to lean into your strengths. Sometimes we become envious of what others have, but we all have different gifts to share. Find what you are best at and let those gifts lead you to your next opportunity, but don’t forget to keep learning and growing along the way.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time that helps you stay inspired and motivated?
I love reading. An engaging book keeps me motivated throughout the day when I know there is an incredible story waiting for me on my nightstand. I also enjoy both listening to and creating podcasts. My favorites to listen to are “This American Life,” “Stuff You Should Know” and “Fresh Air.” And I always feel rejuvenated when I attend a great concert or show.
Is there anything else you would like to share with us?
I am incredibly thankful to the University of Illinois Springfield for my education. I grew up in a rural area with limited resources. If it were not for UIS, I do not know how I would have earned both my undergraduate and graduate degrees. I have learned so much from UIS, and I love the culture at our diverse campus. UIS is a gem.
