UIS Athletics mourns the passing of Dr. Richard D. Ringeisen, former UIS chancellor and a member of the Prairie Stars Hall of Fame. Ringeisen, who served as chancellor from 2001 to 2010, passed away on Feb. 18, 2025, at age 80 in South Carolina.

Ringeisen led UIS through a transformative period, guiding the university through significant milestones, including the transition to a four-year institution, the admittance of freshmen for the first time, and the expansion of campus facilities such as The Recreation and Athletic Center (TRAC) and residence halls. His leadership helped lay the foundation for the university's continued growth.

One of Ringeisen's lasting impacts was his role in transitioning UIS Athletics from NAIA to NCAA Division II in 2009. Under his leadership, the university also joined the Great Lakes Valley Conference, elevating the Prairie Stars to new heights in collegiate athletics.

In recognition of his lasting impact, Ringeisen was inducted into the Prairie Stars Hall of Fame in 2022 as a Friend of the Prairie Stars and Administrator. During the ceremony, he reflected fondly on his time at UIS and expressed pride in the university's growth and accomplishments.

Funeral arrangements are pending. UIS Athletics and the entire university community honor and remember Dr. Ringeisen for his invaluable leadership and lasting contributions.
