The Illinois Springfield baseball team is set to host Northwood University for its home-opening series, with the schedule adjusted due to cold temperatures. The series will now take place on Sunday, Feb. 23, and Monday, Feb. 24, with doubleheaders beginning at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. each day at the UIS Baseball Field.
Illinois Springfield (2-2)
The Prairie Stars split their season-opening series at Tusculum on Feb. 7-8. UIS rallied late to win the opener 10-5 but fell 14-5 in game two. Game three was a 12-8 loss, before UIS capped the series with a 14-5 win, tallying four extra-base hits in each game that Saturday.
Ethan Bowers and Johnny Wendling lead the squad, both batting .500. Bowers recorded three doubles on seven hits for 10 total bases and three RBI. Ty Hollandsworth also had a big weekend, with seven hits, including a home run and a triple, and six RBI, playing a key role in the team's victories. Bowers went 4-for-5 in stolen bases, while Hollandsworth was perfect with a 2-for-2 performance.
Esteban Hernandez, despite not getting the first win, went 4.2 innings in the opener, allowing just three hits and no runs scored, with an opponent batting average of .176. Jack Tobin and Kannon Walker each earned a win during the weekend.
For their performances, shortstop Ethan Bowers was named GLVC Player of the Week, and starting pitcher Esteban Hernandez was honored as GLVC Pitcher of the Week.
Northwood (0-4)
The Timberwolves remain in search of their first victory after being swept by Davenport on Feb. 14-15. The first three games were closely contested, with Northwood falling 3-0, 2-1, and 4-1, before suffering a 16-6 loss in the series finale.
Connor McCaran leads Northwood with a .500 batting average in eight at-bats, tallying one double and one RBI. Myles Beale has a team-high six hits, batting .400 with one double, one RBI, and two stolen bases.
On the mound, Grant LaMarche, Jake Ickes, Tyler Sager, and Trevor Crawford started games last weekend. LaMarche leads the starters with a 2.08 ERA over 4.1 innings.
