What Can F&S Do For You?

Facilities & Services is committed to supporting and maintaining our campus and its community. Our skilled crews are equipped to handle a wide range of tasks, from repairing and maintaining buildings and grounds to providing cleaning services, moving assistance, and surplus support. Additionally, we oversee environmental health and safety, motor pool, and parking operations. For a full list of our services, please visit our website.

If you require repairs or cleaning services, please submit a work order request. You can also request a cost estimate for work you would like to have done, such as adding an electrical outlet, a data jack, or hanging photos or diplomas. Don't hesitate to ask for a cost estimate, especially if you're uncertain about associated costs. Our Construction Superintendent, John Grice, will review your request and draft an estimate for your approval before work commences.

For more significant projects, such as moving a wall or door or remodeling an office, please fill out and submit a Capital Project Request form. If you're unsure which form to submit, our team is always available to assist you. Please feel free to submit a work order request or contact us directly, and we'll guide you through the process to ensure your needs are met.

Going Green Dual Flush Valves

Going Green!

Facilities has begun work to install dual flow flush valves in University Hall and photocells to control the campus’ exterior lighting. The students have funded both of these projects through the Green Fee Committee!! Installing water-saving dual-flow flush valves on the toilets has the ability to reduce the wastewater in UHB by 50%. Installing these valves also eliminates the need to power the auto-flush valves, saving electricity. Although the electricity savings are small, every little bit counts as our students work to reduce the university’s carbon footprint.

Regarding the lighting photocell project, these student fees will enable many campus exterior lights to turn on/off based on the outdoor lighting levels. Allowing the lights to change automatically as our days get longer or shorter as seasons change. This also ensures the lights come on when light levels get low due to cloud cover during storms, rain, and snow to help ensure safe and adequate light is always provided. In addition, installing photocell controls, along with Facilities and Services’ continued upgrade of exterior lighting to LED fixtures, can reduce energy consumption by up to 80% and help eliminate light pollution.

Many thanks to the Green Fee Committee in funding these projects!

Traffic Sign Refresh

Spring into Action: Traffic Sign Refresh!

Over the past few weeks, the Grounds Crew has been hard at work restoring and cleaning up street signs all across campus. Our team has been repairing and straightening signs, tightening bolts, and replacing worn and rusty signs with new ones.

As we wait for the arrival of additional replacement signs, we kindly ask that everyone exercises caution if they see our crews working near streets or intersections. Your safety is our top priority, and we want to ensure that everyone can navigate campus without any issues. Thank you for your cooperation!

Student Union Sculpture Returns

Student Union Sculpture Returns

The sculpture has made its way back to the Union! The midwestern weather took a toll on the finish but restoration was successful, and the artwork returned to its home outside the Union.

Titled "Obstruction Reflection Transition" and created by artist Lisa Williamson, this sculpture was installed and dedicated as part of the Student Union construction project back in 2019.

Did you know? The Illinois General Assembly instituted the acquisition of art as part of the building construction process back in 1977. Since then, approximately 1,000 works have been acquired from talented Illinois artists. If you want to learn more about the Art-In-Architecture program, be sure to visit the Capital Development Board website.

Merit Badge University

Merit Badge University: Empowering Scouts with New Skills and Experiences

The Admissions Office hosted the inaugural Merit Badge University on March 11, bringing over 150 scouts from all over Illinois as well as St. Louis, Missouri and Evansville, Indiana. It was a day designed for scouts to earn merit badges and to tour campus.

Several UIS faculty and staff participated in the event, including F&S Sheet Metal Worker, Phil Markusson. With both of his sons being Eagle Scouts, Phil was well-versed in the scouting program. He and his son Bradley spent the day instructing scouts on different types of welding, welding safety, and supervising hands-on welding time. Phil is already looking forward to next year’s Merit Badge University!

A big thank you to James Koeppe and Phil Markusson for sharing photos and details about this fantastic event!

New UIS Bookstore Entrance

A doorway to opportunities...

... and a new UIS t-shirt!

The bookstore's entrance just got a facelift! Out with the old steel rolling door, and in with a clean and inviting storefront. Approaching customers will now see a much more pleasant entry. We wanted to show you a "before and after" picture, but it seems nobody ever wanted a snapshot of the old door. Trust us, it's a major improvement!

Collaboration in Cleaning

Collaboration in Cleaning

Staff from F&S, Campus Recreation, and Residence Life recently participated in a training session on custodial-related issues. The session covered various topics such as the appropriate use of microfiber cloths, selecting the right floor care products for cleaning and maintaining flooring, and operating large floor scrubbing equipment efficiently and effectively.

F&S BSW staff will be working on special cleaning projects after the semester wraps up. Please reach out to Patty Meyer at (217) 206-6053 or pmeye2@uis.edu if you know of an area that needs special cleaning attention.

Project Updates

F&S has several active projects across the campus. Below are some of the latest developments on a few:

Under Construction:

  • HSB Roof Replacements - Our contractors are in the process of installing metal sheeting around the rooftop environmental units. We anticipate completion of all work about the end of April.
  • BRK Building Operating System Upgrade - This upgrade will enable our building engineers to monitor and manage the environmental systems in Brookens more efficiently. Final tweaks and adjustments are continuing as we start up the cooling systems.
  • PAC Mother's Room - Preparations for the PAC Mother's Room are well underway, with furniture setup coming soon.
  • FRH Esports - The transformation of the former Capitol Grille space into a state-of-the-art esports venue is progressing nicely. Walls are in place, carpet has been ordered, and the wiring and cabling installation is underway. Illinois' newest esports venue will be open in time for students as they return in the fall. Mark your calendar for the ribbon cutting on September 6!
  • UHB UPS Upgrade - in collaboration with ITS, F&S crews are upgrading the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to ensure a reliable power source is in place to protect our computer and network systems. This has been a challenging project in terms of sourcing equipment and delays, but hopes are high that we'll reach completion in October.

Bid & Award:

  • Townhouse Repairs - Planned work in the townhouses will encompass floor and bathroom repairs and replacements. The work will be split between F&S tradesmen and an external contractor. More details to come!
  • Parking Lot D Resurface - This project consists of resurfacing the lot, repairing drainage, and reconfiguring lot entrances. Bids will be received and evaluated in the coming weeks.
