Dear UIS Campus Community,
The university needs everyone to help minimize natural gas usage on campus through next week.
The university has been notified by its natural gas supplier of a high likelihood that a natural gas Operational Flow Order (OFO) will be issued. While UIS works daily to reduce its carbon footprint and minimize natural gas consumption, this week presents an especially critical challenge. Any natural gas usage exceeding the university’s contractual allowance incurs significantly high costs during an OFO.
Actions You Can Take:
Heating and Ventilation
- Set thermostats between 55°F and 68°F.
- Setting the thermostat at 55°F when the space is not occupied (e.g., overnight and over the weekend) is especially helpful.
- Keep interior doors closed to the maximum extent possible.
- Many buildings use zoned heating systems, where different areas are heated independently. Keeping doors closed creates a barrier that traps warm air within specific spaces, minimizes drafts of cooler air from entering heated areas, and helps maintain consistent temperatures. This reduces strain on the heating system and improves overall efficiency.
- Ensure windows stay closed in Lincoln Residence Hall and Founders Residence Hall.
- Ensure fume hood doors remain closed when not in use.
- Dress for cooler temperatures.
- Do not use portable space heaters.
Hot Water Usage
- Limit the use of hot water in showers.
Campus Facilities
- Report Maintenance Issues:
- Notify Facilities and Services about malfunctioning heating systems in academic buildings, TRAC, and the Student Union. Promptly report any malfunctioning heating systems in the dormitories to Residence Life.
These small actions can make a significant difference, especially during natural gas restrictions. Please spread awareness about the OFO and encourage peers and colleagues to participate in energy-saving practices.
Thank you
