The UIS men's soccer team will continue GLVC play with two home games this weekend. On Friday night, the Prairie Stars play Southwest Baptist at 7:30 p.m. for their annual Homecoming game. Sunday afternoon, UIS takes on Rockhurst at 2:30 p.m.

UIS (2-2-1, 2-0-1 GLVC)

The Prairie Stars were still looking for their first win at this time last week, and responded accordingly with wins against Truman State and Quincy for a perfect weekend. Friday night against TSU was a game of few chances in the first half. The Stars came out much stronger in the second half, looking to secure a conference win. An impressive play culminated in a goal by Or Levinstein after Joey Fitzgerald beat his defender and set him up in the 57th minute. The Prairie Stars clinched all three points in the 86th minute when Anton Aduwa-Emovon scored his third goal of the year. UIS outshot TSU 12-3 overall, including a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal.

UIS then traveled to Quincy on Sunday to take on an upstart QU team. The Prairie Stars held the majority of possession and chances in the first half, but couldn't open the scoring. UIS had a great chance in the 65th minute with a penalty kick being awarded. Furkan Yalcin stepped up, but sent it over the bar and the game stayed scoreless. Joey Fitzgerald stepped up in the 87th minute to put UIS ahead. He fed Corne Boshoff in the box, continued his run, latched onto a Boshoff pass, and finished into the corner to earn the win. UIS outshot QU 20-9, with a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. Freshman Joe Brudnak was also named GLVC Defensive Player of the Week after shutting out his opponents.

Southwest Baptist (2-2-3, 1-1-1 GLVC)

SBU played two home matches last weekend against UMSL and conference newcomer Lincoln. On Friday, SBU and UMSL battled to a 0-0 draw, with Dylan Gorman receiving a red card for his second yellow in the final minute. UMSL outshot SBU 14-5, with a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal.

On Sunday, SBU faced Lincoln and suffered a heavy defeat. After Lincoln took the lead in the 36th minute, they scored four more goals in the second half, ending the match 5-0. Lincoln dominated the game with 25 shots to SBU's 5 and a 12-0 advantage in shots on goal.

UIS vs Southwest Baptist History

UIS has seen only success against SBU in the four times the teams have met. The Prairie Stars have scored 19 goals in four games while only allowing 2. Last year's contest also came during Homecoming and saw UIS win 7-0.

Rockhurst (0-5, 0-3 GLVC)

The Hawks have struggled at the start of the 2024 season, still seeking their first win. Rockhurst traveled to Maryville on Friday before hosting UMSL on Sunday. In Friday's match, Rockhurst took an early lead in the 15th minute with a goal from Dylan Ashford, but their momentum halted when Jacopo Belardo received a red card in the 20th minute. Maryville equalized in the 28th minute and took the lead with a penalty kick in the 55th minute, ultimately winning 4-1 after Rockhurst's Octavio Miranda scored in the 75th minute. With the man advantage, Maryville outshot Rockhurst 23-9, including 9-6 in shots on goal.

On Sunday, Rockhurst hosted UMSL, still looking for their first victory. Rockhurst again started strong, taking a lead in the 17th minute with a goal from Asier Olano. However, UMSL equalized in the 57th minute and quickly scored two goals in five minutes to secure a 3-1 lead. Both teams ended the match with 12 shots and 7 on goal.

UIS vs Rockhurst History

In recent history, UIS has been much more successful against the Hawks, going 3-0-2. The Prairie Stars were able to win 1-0 in Kansas City in 2023 with a late penalty kick. Rockhurst last defeated UIS in 2017. Historically, the Prairie Stars hold a 7-16-2 record against Rockhurst.
