Dear UIS Community —
Today is the first day of classes at UIS. This marks the 54th “first day” for UIS learners since our doors opened for classes as Sangamon State University in 1970.
Relative to most other universities in the country, ours is a young institution—but that’s never stopped us from dreaming big and achieving great things. I am so proud of UIS’ esteemed history as Springfield’s public university for the past five decades and to be part of the world-class University of Illinois System since 1995. Still to this day, our faculty, staff and students are drivers of social change, thought leaders and caring global citizens, and those attributes only deepen each year because of our collective experiences during our time here at UIS.
As we begin a new academic year, I want to acknowledge the unrest in the world that affects each of us in different ways. We live in challenging times, but we can remain united in our efforts to navigate these challenges by treating one another well, giving each other the benefit of the doubt and extending grace. It’s so important, perhaps now more than ever, that we strive to be good university citizens. We can continue to exercise diplomacy, discuss difficult ideas respectfully and act with empathy and integrity. Even when we don’t all agree with one another, we can do so in a way that’s respectful and exhibits how diversity of thought is a good and necessary thing.
I’m looking forward to having an amazing year together. Students, whether you are learning with us here in Springfield or from afar, there is a place for you at UIS. Take advantage of every opportunity to make your UIS experience the best one possible. Our faculty and staff are fully invested in your future. Your success is our No. 1 goal.
Have a great fall semester, and go Stars!
