The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) has named its first weekly cross country honors of the season, with UIS runners earning both accolades. Isaac Cortes of the UIS men's cross country team and Madelyn Miller of the UIS women's cross country team were selected as GLVC Runners of the Week by the league's head coaches.
Men's Runner of the Week: Isaac Cortes
Isaac Cortes, a transfer from Saint Martin's University in Washington, finished as the runner-up at the Hy-Vee Prairie Stars Invitational on Friday. He completed the 7K race in 21 minutes and 53 seconds, outperforming all GLVC competitors, including those from Missouri-St. Louis, Maryville, and Truman State. Cortes led UIS to victory with a total score of 21 points, beating out GLVC opponents Missouri-St. Louis (65), Truman State (94), and Maryville (160).
Women's Runner of the Week: Madelyn Miller
Madelyn Miller claimed the individual title at the Hy-Vee Prairie Stars Invitational on Friday. Miller finished the 5K race in 18 minutes and 28 seconds, more than twenty seconds ahead of the runner-up from Truman State. Her performance helped the Prairie Stars secure the team title with a score of 30 points, surpassing Truman State (49), Maryville (50), Missouri-St. Louis (180), and Quincy (288).
The award is Miller's second career Runner of the Week Award. She last won the award in the opening week of the 2023 season.
The Prairie Stars will next compete at Indiana State's John McNichols Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 21, in Terre Haute, Ind.
