The Public Affairs Reporting program at the University of Illinois Springfield is seeking an adjunct broadcast writing instructor to provide individualized and group instruction during the Fall 2022 semester to graduate-level students enrolled in PAR.

The instructor will assist the PAR director in delivering PAR 501, Advanced Public Affairs Reporting, the core news writing course students must complete prior to beginning PAR news reporting internships at the Capitol.

The ideal candidate will be a working or recently retired broadcast journalist with experience covering public affairs, especially those concerning Illinois state government and politics. Familiarity with the PAR program is a plus. A master’s degree is required.

Duties include:

  • Leading scheduled class sessions early in the semester covering the fundamentals of writing for broadcast.
  • Providing written critiques and grading of broadcast students’ once-weekly (occasionally twice-weekly) news writing assignments in a timely manner (typically within one week of submission).
  • Arranging and leading small group and/or individual advising/coaching sessions with broadcast students throughout the semester.

Other than the scheduled class sessions, the adjunct instructor can complete duties at times and days convenient to them and the students. In addition, the instructor may complete all duties remotely, utilizing Zoom or similar platforms to facilitate student interactions.

This position runs from Aug. 19 through Dec. 13, 2022. Salary: $2,600 for the semester.
