Congratulations to Rachel Huls, the 2022 MAT Marshal!
Rachel is a person who embraces challenges and seeks opportunities. In addition to her academic work, Rachel was a tutor at Parkland College at Champaign (2019-2020) and a volunteer at the Museum of Science & Industry at Chicago (2016). From 2016 to 2018, she was the Treasurer of Engineers Without Borders (EWB) at the Illinois Institute of Technology. During her tenure at EWB, the organization successfully financed the development and implementation of a water tower, hand-washing station, and composting latrines in San Claudio, Nicaragua.
Since 2021 Rachel has worked as a Research Assistant with Professor Xiang Huang, assistant professor at UIS Computer Science Department. The project she worked on heavily involved model simulation, data analysis and visualization. Rachel will be presenting their joint paper, “Computing Real Numbers with Large-Population Protocols Having a Continuum of Equilibria,” at the 28th International Conference on DNA Computing and Molecular Programming (DNA 28)--to be held in August 2022. She already presented their joint work at the Annual UIS Student Technology, Arts and Research Symposium.
When she is not working, Rachel loves exploring the outdoors with her dog, Scout. Rachel is excited to utilize her knowledge of mathematics as she builds her career in data science.
