If you have a piece of art or a historical/cultural artifact on display in your office or area and you plan to remove it, please do not throw it away.
Just a quick reminder about Art and Artifacts here at the University of Illinois Springfield. The UIS Art and Acquisitions Committee, co-chaired by Lisa Whelpley and Brytton Bjorngaard, has custodial and curatorial responsibility of all the art and historical and cultural artifacts items at the University. These pieces are important because they enhance our educational environment and support our campus mission.
According to our policies, collections are primarily for education, research, and public exhibition. The Art & Artifacts Collection is maintained indefinitely, meaning the art is preserved as part of our permanent collection and doesn't depreciate in value. Some pieces are bought for specific buildings or areas (like the Art-in-Architecture Program) and those follow a different set of rules but are still part of the collection.
To reiterate, here's the crucial part: If you have a piece of art or a historical/cultural artifact on display in your office or area and you plan to remove it, please do not throw it away. First, contact the Art & Artifacts Committee to see if it's part of the collection. If it is, the committee will handle the removal and storage, making it available for others through campus loan. If it's not part of the collection, the UIS Archivist will review the items for consideration of appropriateness in the Archives. If they deem it no for the Archives, it still needs to be removed properly through surplus because it's University property and should not be thrown out.
Thanks for helping us take care of our art and history!
