Saturday's basketball doubleheader against Quincy is filled with community-related promotions. It's Youth Day, with a special invitation to the community to enjoy a college basketball experience. Fans 18 and under will be admitted for free on this special day, and youth attendees can pick up a free bag of popcorn to enjoy during the game.
The Quincy game is a key rivalry between the Hawks and Prairie Stars. The Bank of Springfield sponsors a traveling trophy for both the men's and women's games, which will be awarded to the winner of each contest. Both trophies currently reside in Springfield, as UIS topped Quincy last March, 79-74 in the women's contest and 97-86 in the men's game. The UIS women's program has won five of the last seven contests in the series, while the Prairie Star men's program has won the last four. This is the only meeting between the two programs this year.
Compass for Kids will be the first UIS community partner of the season. Serving the Springfield community through after-school and summer programs, Compass supports underserved children in Springfield Public Schools. The organization is in the midst of a campaign to support Camp Compass, which served 924 campers last year. Due to a loss of federal funding, the current resources can only fund 150 kids at one camp site. However, the non-profit organization is optimistic that community support will help fund additional campers. A Compass participant will sing the national anthem before the women's game, and others will be participating in on-court activities.
UIS fans are encouraged to support Compass for Kids by donating items at the game to assist with the snack service during the Compass after-school program. Suggested items include individual bags of Goldfish or Cheez-It crackers, granola bars, pretzels, fruit snacks, applesauce, peanut butter crackers, pudding cups, or Rice Krispies Treats.
City of Springfield employees will also be attending the game under outreach initiated by Mayor Misty Buscher.
The women's game will tip off at 1:00 p.m., followed by the men's game at 3:00 p.m.
