When people talk about college, they usually mention the fun parts—making new friends, attending events or starting fresh. However, for some people, there's a side to college that isn’t talked about as much, such as struggling with loneliness, worrying about money or questioning your ability to make it to graduation. If you're feeling this way, you're not alone—and there are ways to get through it to ensure your time at UIS is positive!

Feeling Lonely

Even though college is full of people and opportunities, it is still easy to feel lonely sometimes. You might miss your friends and family you saw regularly back home, or you may feel uncomfortable with a new lifestyle. Meeting new people takes time, and it's okay if you don't have many friends the moment you step on campus.

An excellent way to feel connected is to get involved by joining a club, attending campus events or finding a study group. UIS has plenty of activities and organizations, so you'll likely find people with similar interests. Reaching out and starting a conversation with your classmates, students living in your dorm, professors and other university support staff, such as Student Life and the Counseling Center, may seem like an obstacle, but it will make all the difference to being plugged in and connected within the campus community!

Financial Stress and Concerns About Money

College costs add up fast, and loans can feel overwhelming. When it comes to finances, many students worry about paying everything back once they graduate and how they'll earn money while in school. If you're experiencing similar feelings about your financial situation, know you're not alone.

One way to stay on top of things is to make a simple budget. Keep track of your spending so you know where your money is going. The Office of Financial Aid can help you learn about resources and financial aid options for paying for college, while the University Bursar can walk you through budgeting tips and payment plans so you're better prepared to pay anticipated tuition, fees and other expenses on time each semester.

UIS can also help you find a job on campus. The Career Development Center is a great place to start. Learn which campus units are hiring, and get the details on how/where to apply based on your personal and professional interests.

Wondering if You Can Finish

College can feel challenging. There may be days when you wonder if you can handle all your assignments, exams and responsibilities. It's common for students to experience stress and have doubts about whether they can truly see the light at the end of the tunnel to make it to graduation.

UIS offers various support services, like tutoring and counseling, that will help you manage your academic and personal commitments. Talking to a professor, advisor or even a trusted friend can help you figure out your next steps, maintain balance and keep you motivated throughout the semester.
