The University of Illinois Springfield will expand its in-state tuition pilot program to include additional counties in Missouri, Iowa and Indiana, following approval by the University of Illinois Board of Trustees.

The three-year pilot program, which began in fall 2024, initially offered in-state tuition to students from St. Charles and St. Louis counties in Missouri and Scott County in Iowa. The expansion will now extend in-state tuition to students from Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties in Indiana; Muscatine and Clinton counties in Iowa; and Marion County in Missouri.

“This expansion allows UIS to reach even more students who might have previously considered cost a barrier to attending our university,” said UIS Chancellor Janet L. Gooch. “We are committed to providing access to a high-quality education and ensuring students from these regions can take advantage of the opportunities UIS offers.”

Undergraduate students from the newly added counties will see a nearly 50% reduction in tuition. The current in-state undergraduate tuition rate at UIS is $9,957 per academic year, compared to $19,995 for out-of-state students based on full-time enrollment of 15 credit hours a semester.

The expansion of the program is expected to boost enrollment, enhance diversity and strengthen UIS’ presence in the region.

“The pilot tuition program is already making an impact, with an increase in applications and sustained engagement in recruitment efforts within the original counties,” said Vickie Cook, UIS vice chancellor for enrollment and retention management. “By expanding to these additional areas, UIS further positions itself as an affordable and accessible option for students seeking a top-tier education.”

The in-state tuition program applies only to on-campus undergraduate students. Eligible students will receive in-state tuition for the duration of their degree program, with financial aid available to those who qualify.
