WHAT: The University of Illinois Springfield presents the 12th annual Student Technology, Arts & Research Symposium (STARS). The three-day event showcases student research and creative activities during the academic year. Events are free and open to the public.

WHEN:       6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 12

                     5-7 p.m. on Thursday, April 13 (online only)

                     9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, April 14

WHERE:    UIS Student Union, 2251 Richard Wright Dr., Springfield and online

DETAILS: UIS undergraduate and graduate students will present their research and creative activities through short talks, poster presentations and art exhibitions. The symposium gives the community a chance to learn about the variety of work being done by students and gives businesses the opportunity to network with potential new talent.

Wednesday, April 12

  • Keynote Speaker Doug Hamilton, associate vice president, managing director and head of AI research at Nasdaq, will speak from 6-7 p.m. in the Student Union Pre-Ballroom on “Ethical Artificial Intelligence: An Industry Perspective.” Hamilton earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from UIS in 2012. He then attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he earned his master’s in engineering and management.
  • A reception will be held from 7-8 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom

Thursday, April 13 (online only)

  • The Violet Margin Literary Journal Launch will be held online from 5-6 p.m.
  • Online student presentations will occur from 6-7 p.m.

Friday, April 14

  • Student oral presentations will take place from 9-11 a.m. in the Student Union second floor conference rooms.
  • Poster and art sessions will take place from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom.
  • A luncheon and awards ceremony will be held at 12:30 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom.
  • The Outstanding Master’s Thesis Awards will be announced in the Student Union Ballroom from 1:30-2:30 p.m.
