The Illinois Springfield track & field teams are gearing up for exciting competition in 2025, with both the indoor and outdoor schedules now finalized. The Prairie Stars will compete at six regular-season indoor meets in January and February, followed by five regular-season outdoor meets in March and April.
Indoor Track & Field
The indoor season kicks off with the Gerry England Invitational in Indianapolis, Ind., on Jan. 17, held at the site of the GLVC Indoor Track & Field Championships. It continues with the Hoosier Classic on Jan. 18, also in Indianapolis. The teams then head to Louisville, Ky., for the Bellarmine Invitational on Jan. 24, followed by the Lewis Invitational in Romeoville, Ill., on Feb. 7.
The schedule also features the prestigious GVSU Big Meet in Allendale, Mich., on Feb. 14-15, before culminating with the GLVC Indoor Track & Field Championships at the ARC on UIndy's campus in Indianapolis, Ind., on March 1-2.
In 2024
The Prairie Stars had strong showings at the GLVC Indoor Championships, with both the men's and women's teams finishing 9th out of 12 scoring teams. The women's team earned 15 points, while the men's team scored 21 points. The Lewis Flyers took the overall championship on both sides.
Outdoor Track & Field
After a competitive indoor campaign, the Prairie Stars will transition to outdoor competition, starting with the WashU Distance Carnival in St. Louis, Mo., on March 28. The Redbird Challenge in Normal, Ill., follows on March 29, and the Jim Vargo Invitational in Louisville, Ky., takes place on April 4.
The team will travel west for the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif., from April 16-19, while the rest of the squad competes at the Gibson Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind., on April 19. Both the men's and women's teams will aim for success at the GLVC Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Romeoville, Ill., from May 1-3.
In 2024
The UIS men's team finished 10th overall with 27 points, powered by strong performances from Ryan Jones, Jacob Hanna, and Cort Ross. The UIS women's team placed 12th with seven points, largely thanks to Madelyn Miller and Jade Aubrey.
Prairie Stars to Watch
On the women's side, Madelyn Miller stands out as the top-scoring returner, having earned All-GLVC honors in cross country in consecutive seasons and scoring at recent track championships. Kaleigh Inniss, another standout, was recently named an All-GLVC Cross Country runner, and Jordan Serrahn, who was just outside the All-GLVC field at the GLVC Cross Country Championships, is determined to earn her first All-GLVC honors in track this season.
On the men's side, Ryan Jones and Noah Tegeler each earned All-GLVC track & field honors last year, with Jones taking second in the outdoor 3,000m steeplechase and Tegeler placing third in the indoor 3,000m. Gabe Martinez, another returning star, earned All-GLVC honors in 2023 with a third-place finish in the indoor 3,000m. Recent All-GLVC runners for the UIS men's cross country team include newcomer Isaac Cortes, and returners Briar Nevills, Joey Karlesky, and Noah Tegeler. Newcomers Balin Doud, Matt Padilla, and Brock Loftus are also in the mix, each finishing just outside the top spots at recent cross country championships.
