The UIS women's basketball team will travel to Liberty, Mo., to face William Jewell College on Monday evening at 5:30 p.m. This marks the Prairie Stars' first road GLVC matchup of the season as both teams look to secure their first conference win.
Illinois Springfield (0-5, 0-1 GLVC)
The Prairie Stars are seeking their first win of the season after a challenging opening stretch. In their GLVC opener on Saturday, UIS fell to UMSL, 87-67, despite an impressive scoring effort led by Diavian Mehundrew's 27 points on 10-of-16 shooting. Kayla Rice added 17 points, and Emari Doby contributed 13.
UIS showed offensive promise, shooting 42.4% from the field and 38.9% from beyond the arc, but struggled defensively against UMSL's efficient attack. The Prairie Stars aim to improve on the boards and limit turnovers to find success on Monday night.
The Prairie Stars are averaging 63.8 points per game this season while shooting 41.1% from the field and 29.3% from beyond the arc.
William Jewell (1-4, 0-0 GLVC)
The Cardinals enter Monday's contest after a non-conference loss to Wayne State College, 82-60. William Jewell struggled to contain the Wildcats' second-quarter surge and trailed by double digits at halftime.
Ayden Shannon has been a bright spot for the Cardinals, leading the team with 23 points against Wayne State—her third consecutive game with 20 or more points. The Cardinals also got contributions from Kirsten Hauck, Maja Komaszynska, and Paris Opelt, who all grabbed six rebounds each.
As a team, William Jewell averages 58.4 points per game, shooting 35.3% from the field and 30.3% from three-point range.
The Matchup
Both teams will look to rebound from recent setbacks and gain momentum in GLVC play. UIS will rely on Mehundrew Rice, and Doby to spark the offense, while William Jewell will count on Shannon's scoring prowess and rebounding to control the game. Execution on the defensive end and in transition will likely determine the outcome.
