Building Service Worker Yokasty Owens has been named the 2022 Employee of the Year at the University of Illinois Springfield. She was honored during a reception on Jan. 19, 2023, in the UIS Student Union.

Before announcing the winner, UIS Chancellor Janet Gooch thanked the eleven Employees of the Month who were nominated for the award.

Owens, who was the May 2022 Employee of the Month, is known for going above and beyond her responsibilities to help people in need.

Last spring, when the UIS Archives in Brookens Library started to flood due to a water leak, Owens jumped into help, removing heavy boxes of historical materials that needed to be saved. She helped to dry the materials and even brought a staff member a bottle of water to drink.

“She truly cares about her job, takes a lot of pride in her work and strives to put forth her best efforts even when she is tired,” said Patty Meyer, her supervisor. “She is a compliment and tribute to the department. Many staff have complimented her and are always happy to see her because of her positivity and pleasant demeanor.”

Meyer describes her work performance as “remarkable,” adding that she sets a great example for others in the department.

“She leads by example and creates a positive, friendly working environment for all,” Meyer said. “She truly cares about her job and works very hard. She never complains about others and keeps a positive attitude no matter what the day brings.”

Meyer says Owens “does more than expected” and “gives great attention to detail” when it comes to her work.

“She is dedicated and works independently and needs no supervision in her daily routines because she is always willing to do whatever needs to be done. She consistently does extra with a smile and positive attitude,” Meyer said.

“Yokasty has been a shining star since she has been hired,” Meyer added.
