2024-2026 Fellows
Suyang Yu
Dr. Suyang Yu, Lecturer at the School of Public Management and Policy, will investigate UIS faculty and students’ awareness of campus resources and services and potential difficulties when utilizing resources. Special attention will be given to new students and faculty, particularly those with an international background. The ultimate goal is to develop propositions, solutions, and creative activities, with the help of the COLRS, to increase faculty and students’ teaching and learning experience at UIS.
Jae Sik Ha
Dr. Jae Sik Ha, an Associate Professor of Communication and Media, is embarking on an educational initiative to develop a guidebook for digital media literacy. Dr. Ha aims to offer tangible recommendations for enhancing media literacy in the post-truth era, characterized by pressing issues, such as disinformation and digital addiction. In this era, media users face physical and mental health challenges due to the widespread use of digital devices and social media platforms. Dr. Ha seeks to improve students’ digital media literacy by providing a valuable resource for UIS students enrolled in media and communication courses.
2023-2025 Fellows
Hei-Chi Chan
Dr. Hei-Chi Chan, Associate Professor of Mathematics, is teaming up with Dr. Neetu Singh to create an Artificial Intelligence (AI) campus learning community. The goal is to engage, educate, and equip stakeholders (faculty, staff, & students) on the application and implication of AI tools and techniques. One of the primary focuses is to provide learning opportunities for students, creating more access for them to learn and integrate AI tools and techniques, giving them an edge as they enter a workforce that is rapidly transformed by generative AI.
Amy Dunning
Dr. Amy Dunning, Assistant Professor in the School of Education, will explore students' engagement with gallery walks in an asynchronous online instructional format. Gallery walks, a highly effective teaching and learning strategy, are typically used for in-person instruction; however, over recent years, gallery walks have become virtual or digitized to allow students to explore other’s thinking without being in person. Using Jamboards, a digital interactive whiteboard, she will explore students' questioning and discussions in gallery walks.
Matthew Geras
Dr. Matthew Geras, Assistant Professor in the School of Politics and International Affairs, will develop and field a survey directed towards UIS students to learn more about the circumstances in which students are interested in taking synchronous and HyFlex online classes. He also plans to help COLRS with their professional development programs on teaching HyFlex classes.
Betsy Goulet
Dr. Betsy Goulet, Clinical Assistant Professor in the School of Public Management and Policy will collaborate with the Alliance for Experiential Problem-Based Learning to facilitate the expansion of PBL activities on the UIS campus, building interdepartmental use of problem-based learning in numerous programs, both undergrad and graduate. The Alliance uses a PBL framework created by the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, utilizing the Core Concepts for understanding the traumatic response. PBL is a roadmap for critical thinking, a process for reducing bias and improving decision-making. When combined with simulation training, students are able to solve challenging problems using PBL with the benefit of practicing skills in realistic environments.
Liang Kong
Dr. Liang Kong, an Associate Professor of Mathematical Sciences, is exploring how AI-generated content (AIGC) can improve mathematics and data science education. The project aims to conduct a systematic review and comparative analysis of the impact of popular AI tools in online education, investigate the AI algorithms involved, and integrate the AI tool(s) into an online course.
Neetu Singh
Dr. Neetu Singh, Associate Professor of Management Information Systems, is collaborating with Dr. Hei-Chi Chan to create an Artificial Intelligence (AI) campus learning community.
