Respondus offers two proctoring options for online exams in Canvas. Respondus LockDown Browser locks down the testing environment so students cannot print, copy, access other applications, or search the internet during an exam. Respondus Monitor builds upon LockDown Browser by using a student's webcam to record the testing session for automated proctoring.

Set Up LockDown Browser in Your Canvas Course

  1. In your Canvas course, select Settings.
  2. Select the Navigation tab.
  3. Locate LockDown Browser, select the three dots next to it, and select Enable.
  4. Select Save at the bottom of the page.

Configure an Exam with LockDown Browser

  1. Make sure the exam has been created in your Canvas course.
  2. Select LockDown Browser from the course navigation menu.
  3. The LockDown Browser Dashboard will display the available exams. Exams marked Enabled require LockDown Browser; exams marked Not Enabled do not.
  4. Open the menu next to the exam and select Settings.
  5. Select Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this test.
  6. If desired, enter a password that students must use to begin the exam.
  7. Save the exam settings

Use Respondus Monitor for Automated Proctoring

Respondus Monitor works with LockDown Browser to provide automated proctoring for online exams. Students use a webcam to record themselves during the exam, and instructors may also choose to record the student's computer screen. Suspicious testing behavior is flagged for instructor review.

View Respondus Monitor Results

To view proctoring results after students complete an exam, open LockDown Browser from the course navigation menu and review the results for the exam.

Enable Respondus Monitor After Copying Exams

  1. Open the copied Canvas course.
  2. Select LockDown Browser from the course navigation menu.
  3. Open the LockDown Browser Dashboard. Accessing the dashboard activates Respondus Monitor for the copied course.
  4. Confirm that the appropriate LockDown Browser and Monitor settings are enabled for the copied exams.

Support and Troubleshooting

If students experience problems with Respondus LockDown Browser, direct them to the Respondus Student Support guide. For issues with Respondus Monitor, direct students to the Respondus Monitor help page. Instructors experiencing problems should review the Instructor FAQ first. If the issue persists, contact COLRS for troubleshooting assistance.

Provide a Practice Quiz

Before a high-stakes exam, consider creating a practice quiz that uses Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor. A practice quiz gives students an opportunity to become familiar with the technology and confirm that it is working correctly before exam day.
