Application Procedures

  1. Schedule an appointment to meet with Study Away Programs to review your proposed study away program and to go over the application procedures.
    • Complete the SAP Interest Form to share your information with us and schedule an appointment

  2. Schedule an appointment to meet with your academic advisor to review your progress towards your degree and your proposed study abroad program.  Should you wish to transfer coursework to your major, it is necessary to submit your proposed courses for your department's review.
  3. Fill out the Study Away Application in EngageU (coming soon) 
    • Must secure a faculty member or a past/present employer to complete a recommendation for you before submitting the application.
  4. Apply for UIS Donor Funded Global Experience. The deadline is Feb. 15th (Note: Subject to availability. Please confirm with the OEL Office.)
  5. As part of your SAP application you will be asked to submit the following forms:
    • Students applying for UIS-Led Short-Term Programs will also need to complete the
  6. Application Approval Workflow:
    1. OEL Pre-Approval
    2. Recommender (make sure you type the email accurately)
    3. Academic Advisor (make sure to select the correct advisor),
    4. The Dean of Students or Proxy,
    5. Financial assistance,
    6. OEL Final Approval
  7. If you’re applying for a UIS-Independent Program, collaboration with the Study Away Office is necessary to submit additional documentation for that program's application. The required documents include:
    • The Host University's Application Form: First, choose and complete your application based on your program of choice.
    • Official Transcripts: Submit your official transcripts to the Office of Engaged Learning.
    • Application Fee: Submit proof of payment of the application fee for the program if applicable.
    • Two (2) Recommendation Letters: Submit 2 letters of recommendation in line with the program requirements.

Special note on NSE applications – Each March NSE holds a conference of all member institutions where students are placed for the following academic year (Fall Semester, Spring Semester, and Full Year).  For students to be considered for the March placement they must submit to Study Away Programs their UIS Global Experience Program application listing their top 4-5 choices by Feb. 7th.  Placement after the conference is possible.  For more details please contact Study Away Programs.
