The Graduate Certificate in Medical Microbiology is a 12-credit hour, post-baccalaureate certificate program for students who want to work in a medical microbiology laboratory and have already earned a bachelor’s degree in a non-MLS discipline. The Graduate Certificate in Medical Microbiology can be completed in three semesters. Individuals who successfully complete the Graduate Certificate in Medical Microbiology are eligible to sit for the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC) Scientist in Microbiology examination via route 3.
Students completing the Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) – Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) Articulation program are eligible to request an opportunity to competency out of a portion of the clinical practicum requirements. MLT-MLS Articulation students must still complete all UIS graduation requirements to earn the Medical Laboratory Science, B.S. degree.

The Pre-Medical Concentration is a 21-credit hour program through which MLS undergraduate students can formally prepare for medical or professional schools. Students enrolled in the Pre-Medical Concentration must complete the requirements of the concentration in addition to the requirements of the Medical Laboratory Science, B.S.
The Medical Laboratory Science, B.S. is a 120-credit hour degree program with two distinct academic phases: the Pre-Professional Phase and the Professional Phase. The Pre-Professional Phase is the first two years of the four-year degree. During the Pre-Professional Phase, students complete UIS general education requirements and MLS prerequisites – MLS prerequisite requirements can be viewed in the UIS catalog.
The Graduate Certificate in Immunohematology is a 13-credit hour, post-baccalaureate certificate program for students who want to work in a medical immunohematology laboratory and have already earned a bachelor’s degree in a non-MLS discipline. The Graduate Certificate in Immunohematology can be completed in three semesters. Individuals who successfully complete the Graduate Certificate in Immunohematology are eligible to sit for the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC) Scientist in Blood Bank examination via route 3.
