Women of Color Initiative

By aligning itself with the UIS Diversity Center, the program satisfies all the objectives that Center endeavors to provide. The goal of the Diversity Center is to “foster a supportive environment for students to live, learn and grow as active members of the academic community and as individuals…through educational, cultural, and social programming activities and to assist in the recruitment, transition and retention of ethnic minority and underrepresented students at UIS.”

ECCE: Festival De Mujeres

UIS Academic Affairs, the Diversity Center, and the Women’s Center will be hosting an ECCE Speaker Series event. Through this students, staff, and faculty will be able to learn about the window to Latina activism during the 1970s in Chicago. Additionally, there will be an opportunity to look at a digital exhibit on the Festival De Mujeres and learn the significance of the cultural and activist heart of the Mexican Midwest. There will also be a panel with Diana Solís, a visual artist, photographer, and educator, Dr.

The Hela Legacy

GPhio International Sorority, Inc. and AKA Sorority Inc. will be sharing a viewing of a film on Henrietta Lacks, who made one of the greatest medical contributions. There will also be a discussion to talk about her legacy and her significant importance in the medical world.

Luna Fest

The Career Development Center, Gender & Sexuality Student Services, and the Women’s Center will be hosting a fundraising film festival highlighting stories by women and gender-nonconforming filmmakers and bringing people together in their communities. There will be seven short films shown from everyone including poets, conservationists, and activists to educators. Then afterward there will be a discussion led by Emmy-winning filmmaker, Samantha Sanders.

Danza de Damas

Baile Monarcas will be celebrating Women's History Month with a variety of Latin dance performances to educate others on the important role women play in Latin American dances. This will highlight the Latin culture and its connections to music and dance passed down from generation to generation.

Women in the Military

The Military and Veteran Student Services Office will be hosting ‘Stories of Empowering Women in the Military’. There will be women identifying veterans of the armed forces as guest speakers sharing their experiences on the field. They will speak on sexism and how they overcame and succeeded in a male-dominated workplace in addition to some hardships they’ve faced. It is an educational opportunity to learn how women have had to overcome gender bias challenges to demonstrate the capability to succeed in this highly demanding and often highly dangerous work environment.

Chancellor's Women's Leadership Reception

The Women’s Center will be hosting a networking event in partnership with the Chancellor’s office for students to meet other women in leadership roles across many workforces. There will be panelists to share their experiences and career journeys as well as UIS alumni. This is a formal event and participants are encouraged to wear business casual apparel. Additionally, participants are required to RSVP on UIS connection so be sure to do so!

Option to select ‘MENA’ now available in My UI Info

Prompted by feedback from members of our U of I community, a system-wide group is working to add “Middle Eastern or North African (MENA)” as an option for an individual’s race or ethnicity in our University systems. The option to document “MENA” as your racial or ethnic identity in My UI Info is now available. Updates to the University’s student systems will be communicated separately at the appropriate time.
