University of Illinois Springfield senior Anna Schurz, a student-athlete on the women's soccer team from Carbondale, Ill., has been awarded the prestigious Abraham Lincoln Civic Engagement Award, recognizing her exceptional leadership, commitment to service, and academic excellence. Bestowed annually by the Governor, this honor names Schurz a Student Laureate of the Lincoln Academy of Illinois—a distinction given to an outstanding senior from each of the four-year degree-granting institutions in Illinois.

The award honors students who reflect the values upheld by President Lincoln, including integrity, compassion, and dedication to creating positive change. Schurz has consistently demonstrated these qualities throughout her time at UIS, excelling on the soccer field and as a dedicated leader within the UIS community.

Reflecting on the recognition, Schurz shared, "I am genuinely honored to receive this award, representing UIS, which symbolizes my dedication and the values I aspire to uphold. This recognition inspires me to keep making a positive impact in all that I do. I aim to honor this acknowledgment through my positivity and my ongoing commitment to excellence, integrity, and compassion."

Schurz's commitment to academics and extracurricular pursuits has been evident since high school, where she graduated as valedictorian while competing in three sports. At UIS, she continues to prioritize academic success and plans to further her studies with a master's degree after completing her bachelor's.

The UIS athletic department congratulates Anna Schurz on this well-deserved honor, celebrating her outstanding contributions to the UIS and Springfield communities.
