The Illinois Springfield women's basketball team took down the Lincoln Blue Tigers, 53-44, on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, UIS improved to 5-16 overall and 4-9 in GLVC play, while Lincoln fell to 1-17, 0-12 GLVC.
Game Recap
- Lincoln started fast, hitting four of their first six shots to build an early 8-2 lead. UIS responded at the free-throw line and began finding success in the paint, cutting the deficit in half.
- Both offenses traded baskets, with UIS stringing together layups while Lincoln knocked down a three-pointer. The first quarter ended with the Prairie Stars holding a slim 15-14 advantage.
- The second quarter opened with limited scoring, featuring only a Lincoln layup and an Allysia McDaniel jumper in the first five minutes. UIS continued to push inside, eventually extending its lead to 24-21 after an 11-10 scoring edge in the period.
- At the half, UIS led 26-24, despite shooting 33.3% to Lincoln's 45.5%. However, the Prairie Stars capitalized on their opportunities at the free-throw line and committed significantly fewer turnovers.
- Both teams remained locked in a tight contest through the third quarter, trading baskets with brief scoring spurts and droughts. UIS worked efficiently in the paint, shooting 50% in the period, while Lincoln struggled from deep, going just 1-for-6 from three-point range. By the end of the quarter, UIS held a 39-35 lead.
- Foul trouble became a factor for both teams late. Lincoln stayed within striking distance, trailing just 43-40 with three minutes to play. However, UIS delivered the final blow, an 8-4 run that put Lincoln behind for good.
- Diavian Mehundrew led the Prairie Stars with 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting while Niyah Udoiwod contributed 11 points and six rebounds. Allysia McDaniel nearly recorded a double-double, finishing with eight points and a team-high nine rebounds.
- UIS dominated the paint, scoring 32 points inside compared to Lincoln's 20, while also benefiting from strong bench production, 27 points to Lincoln's 3.
UIS looks to build on this win as they return to GLVC action at home next week, hosting McKendree on Thursday and Maryville on Saturday.
