History & Culture

Springfield has a rich history and numerous historical sites and cultural experiences. Discover non-Lincoln sites such as a Frank Lloyd Wright house from his Prairie period, intact sections of US Route 66, and the Old State Capitol.

Illinois State Capital

Among many other beautiful, historic buildings in the central district of Springfield, the Illinois State Capitol looks monumental and very impressive, both in its design and in its social significance. Built in the architectural styles of the French Renaissance and Italianate, with a total height of 361 ft (110 m), the Illinois capitol is the tallest non-skyscraper capitol, even exceeding the height of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.

Shopping

Shopping enthusiasts come from all around central Illinois for adventures in retail, and to the specialty shops in Springfield’s downtown historic district. For students, regular bus service is provided from the UIS campus to the mall, downtown area, and to other points around the city.

The Shopping Shuttle to the White Oaks Mall, Walmart, Barnes and Noble and Target runs on Sundays and Wednesdays. The shuttle runs hourly round trips from the UIS pick-up locations to the shopping locations and back to UIS from noon to 5 PM on Sundays and 6 PM to 10 PM on Wednesdays.

Night Life

The Springfield community has rich legacy of prolific and original artisans, including Lincoln, poets Vachel Lindsey and Edgar Lee Masters, William Maxwell, Artie Mathews, and Morris Day.

Except for neighborhood bars, Springfield's nightlife is mostly clustered downtown where a number of bars offer live music and late-night fun. The Springfield theater scene provides central Illinois with quality performances, educational opportunities, and a creative outlet for live theatrical arts. The Springfield Area Arts Council is dedicated to developing and sustaining arts and culture initiatives in Springfield and surrounding communities.
