Yamani Shareef chose the University of Illinois Springfield because it gave him a chance to continue his academic and athletic career as a member of the Prairie Stars men’s basketball team. “I really like the close-knit, family feel that UIS and Springfield gives off,” he said. “Additionally, Springfield is a very cool place to live and it has so many attractions, restaurants and places to explore and enjoy.” Back at home, Shareef volunteers at his brother’s school, which provides education, life skills, training, therapy and recreation to a student body comprised of all autistic students. Following graduation from UIS, he plans to take the required tests in order to become an actuary.
