Phillip (Matthew) Machino of Woodson, a senior at Jacksonville High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield for Fall Semester 2022 and awarded a $32,000 Capital Scholars Honors Program scholarship and a $40,000 Camerata Music Scholarship totaling $72,000 over four years. The scholarships are renewed annually if the student maintains GPA and other requirements.

At UIS, Machino plans to major in business administration with a concentration in economics and a minor in music.

“I look forward to participating in the music program and the UIS Jazz Ensemble,” he said. “(UIS) is a great school, close to home.”

At Jacksonville High School, Machino is a member of jazz band, concert band, marching band, National Honor Society and National English Honor Society. He also plays on the tennis team.

Capital Scholars Honors Program scholarships are competitive and are based on high school GPA. The Honors Program is a selective undergraduate program combining high standards and emphasis on excellence with a small residential college model, enrolling only about 100 first-year students each year.

The Camerata Scholarship is available to incoming students of any major and is performance based. Camerata students perform in a variety of musical combinations for events on and off campus throughout the academic year.
