Dr. Lan Dong, Louise Hartman and Karl Schewe Professor in Liberal Arts and Sciences and Professor of English in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at UIS, has published a chapter entitled “(Un)Masking a Chinese American Superhero: Gene Luen Yang and Sonny Liew’s The Shadow Hero” in the award-winning book Beyond the Icon: Asian American Graphic Narratives.
Foregrounding cultural productions by Asian North American artists and writers, the book brings together nuanced interdisciplinary discussions in American studies, comics studies, ethnic studies, and gender sexuality studies.
Edited by Eleanor Ty and published by the Ohio State University Press, Beyond the Icon won this year’s The Comics Studies Society Edited Book Prize, an award recognizing research-oriented and multi-contributor collections that “significantly advance the field of Comics Studies” and “greatly add to our understanding of comic art and/or its historical, cultural, critical, or theoretical contexts.”
