Joshua Lauer, an electrician with Facilities and Services at the University of Illinois Springfield, has been selected as the Employee of the Month for September 2024. Lauer is known for his exceptional dedication and innovative contributions to the campus community.

“I enthusiastically support Josh Lauer for Employee of the Month,” said Chuck Coderko, associate vice chancellor of facilities and services. “Josh has consistently demonstrated exceptional dedication, innovation and expertise as an electrician, making him an invaluable asset to our university’s facilities and services team.”

Lauer has been with UIS since July 2018 and has played a key role in numerous projects that have significantly enhanced the university’s operations. His contributions include the expansion of two CISCO computer labs, which increased lab capacity by 50%, and the modernization of the Performing Arts Center’s Studio Theater lighting control system.

“His innovative solutions have saved the university substantial costs and significantly enhanced our operational capabilities and support for various academic and auxiliary enterprises,” Coderko said.

Lauer’s efforts in troubleshooting and repairing electrical control malfunctions in the softball field scoreboard saved the Athletics Department tens of thousands of dollars. He also collaborated with Information Technology Services and the Police Department to modernize approximately 100 electronic access control systems across multiple academic buildings, enhancing campus security and access control capabilities.

“Josh serves as the backbone of our electrical shop, consistently going above and beyond to ensure the efficiency and functionality of our campus infrastructure,” Coderko said.

Beyond these projects, Lauer led a team in installing LED lighting on the Colonnade, a project funded by student Green Fees that supported the university’s sustainability goals. He also played a critical role in renewing electrical and lighting systems for the new Anatomage labs, supporting UIS’ mission to provide student-centered educational experiences.

Lauer’s day-to-day work includes critical repair and deferred maintenance, such as repairing area of rescue and fire alarm systems, rerouting electrical cabling for streetlights and fixing ADA electronic door openers. He is known for his responsiveness, flexibility and willingness to go above and beyond in his role.

“His contributions support the university's operational needs and directly impact the success and growth of our academic and student support initiatives,” Coderko said. “The university is lucky to have him.”
