Dear Faculty and Staff —

It is that time in the year when the number of people struggling with their mental health typically increases. Common themes include stress, anxiety, depression, trauma and difficulties with interpersonal relationships. Though these struggles are often expressed at the individual level, they often arise from systemic issues in our environment and culture. We all have an opportunity to create a supportive environment for learning and growth.

Be mindful of any shifts in behaviors, mood and/or emotions in yourself and others. These can be the early indicators of needing additional support. Check in with yourself and others. A small gesture of support can have an oversized impact. However, sometimes people need more support.

If you or someone you know needs assistance, please take these steps:

Refer students to the UIS Counseling Center;

Refer employees to the State Employee Assistance Program.

  • EAP is available to employees who are eligible for the State Employees Group Insurance Program. If the employee participates in a state health plan, EAP services are also available to their eligible dependents. The State EAP is a free, voluntary and confidential program that provides problem identification, counseling and referral services. Employees will be directed to a Guidance Consultant to assist them with a variety of concerns. All calls and counseling sessions are confidential, except as required by law.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter. Together, we can foster a compassionate community that prioritizes mental well-being. Let’s continue to support one another and create an environment where everyone feels valued and heard. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
