Dear students, faculty and staff:

UIS leadership has been carefully monitoring the flurry of executive orders announced at the federal level over the past several days, and we have been collaborating with the U of I System and colleagues to best understand how these announcements may affect our university community.

Below are updates on areas of greatest impact to our students, faculty and staff:

  • A Jan. 27 memo from the White House Office of Management and Budget directed federal agencies to “temporarily pause all activities related to obligation or disbursement of all Federal financial assistance, and other relevant agency activities that may be implicated by the executive orders.…” originally effective at 5 p.m. Jan. 28. A federal judge, however, issued a brief administrative stay until 5 p.m. Feb. 3, which temporarily blocked the pause. It is our current understanding that, if enacted, the temporary pause should not affect Pell grants, federal student loans or GI Bill payments. Nor should it affect Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security benefits, Veterans Affairs benefits or SNAP.
  • UIS has established a resource page for students, faculty and staff regarding issues related to immigration and undocumented individuals. Please review these resources so you are aware of how to support the community.  If you have suggestions for additional resources to share on this page, please email chancellor@uis.edu.
  • The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs is monitoring potential impacts related to funded research and programs. If you receive any communication from your sponsors, please share them with ora@uis.edu so they can assist in reviewing and advising.

We will continue to monitor the situation closely and share updates as warranted. Please remember that in times of such high uncertainty, it is more important than ever to treat one another with kindness and compassion to support a safe and welcoming community for all.

Thank you,

Janet
