University of Illinois Springfield employees were recognized for their outstanding contributions during the Chancellor’s Awards and Staff Appreciation Day held at the Student Union on March 13, 2025. The ceremony, overseen by UIS Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost Brandon Schwab, featured two prestigious awards: the Chancellor’s Academic Professional Excellence (CAPE) Award and the Chancellor’s Award to Recognize Excellence in Civil Service (CARE).

Four additional awards were presented, recognizing outstanding contributions by UIS staff members in categories such as student success, leadership, rapid growth and community enhancement.

CAPE Award

Nicole Hager

The Chancellor’s Academic Professional Excellence (CAPE) Award was presented to Nicole Hager, senior associate athletic director for academics and compliance and senior woman administrator. The award recognizes Hager’s dedication, exceptional service and significant contributions to the University of Illinois Springfield.

"Her work is flawless. She is encouraging and builds others up. She is professional and prolific in her service to UIS," one nominator wrote.

Hager has served in several key roles at UIS, including coordinator of First-Year Seminar and adviser in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. She has been instrumental in academic success efforts for student-athletes, reinstating key initiatives that foster collaboration across campus.

"Nicole tirelessly works to support all students at UIS, but particularly athletes and first-year students," another nominator wrote. "She collaborates with so many people—faculty, staff and administration—to ensure that the programming she runs works effectively. She advocates for her students fiercely and always strives to find the 'yes' in any situation.”

Beyond her formal responsibilities, Hager plays an active role in the UIS community. She frequently attends and promotes campus events, encouraging student engagement both in and out of the classroom. Her leadership in advising, academic programming and student success initiatives makes a lasting impact on the university.

"There are a handful of people on this campus that I believe could represent UIS well to any audience, and Nicole is near the top of that list," a nominator wrote.

CARE Award

Patty Meyer

The Chancellor’s Award to Recognize Excellence in Civil Service (CARE) was presented to Patty Meyer in recognition of her exceptional performance, leadership and significant contributions to the UIS community.

Meyer serves as the director of facilities operations, overseeing custodial services, parking and transportation. In this role, she ensures the smooth operation of these essential services while fostering a positive and productive environment for her team.

Under Meyer’s leadership, the facilities team has thrived. She has built strong relationships with state and local agencies, securing 15 new vehicles to replace the university’s aging fleet—saving approximately $300,000 in maintenance and replacement costs. She has also implemented professional development programs for building service workers, improving efficiency and morale within her department.

Meyer’s commitment to UIS extends beyond her department. She actively serves on multiple campus committees, including the Civil Service Advisory Council and the Sustainability Committee. She also mentors her staff, encouraging professional growth and inspiring several employees to pursue higher education.

"Patty is the consummate professional," one nominator wrote. "She uses data to inform decision-making and administers her unit with compassion and professionalism."
