The Therkildsen Field Station at Emiquon provides researchers and students of all ages with the opportunity to study, explore, and learn from this unique floodplain restoration project. We offer hands-on activities that illustrate how a wetland functions, the difference between a healthy and unhealthy wetland, and how various species’ survival depends on this environment.
Our field trips focus on the Marvelous Macroinvertebrates of the Emiquon Preserve!
Through three main activities—sampling, sorting, and examining samples—students will learn how to identify aquatic macroinvertebrates and how these creatures can be used as indicators of the health of wetlands and other aquatic systems. Students will learn to collect macroinvertebrate samples in the wetland using a D-net and then, examine and identify their samples in the lab utilizing a microscope. We welcome participants 9-12th grade, college-level, and adult life-long learners to wade into the wetland with us for this experience.

We explore the world of the Marvelous Macroinvertebrates of the Emiquon Preserve through our hands-on Water Discovery Table with participants, pre-K-8th.
Field trips may also incorporate the study of zooplankton, mussels, wetland wildlife, and nature observation.
