Lizette Zavala chose the University of Illinois Springfield because of the “beautiful campus” and the Capital Scholars Honors Program. She is president of the UIS chapter of HOSA-Future Health Professionals, president of Students Helping Detention Centers (SHDC), vice president of the UIS Organization for Latin American Students, a student representative for the immigration committee at UIS, as well as the student representative for the Anti-Racism & Social Justice Task Force. She is also a tutor for Organic Chemistry through the Chemistry Club and a member of Gamma Phi Omega International Sorority Inc., in addition to being a resident assistant on campus. “I like the family aspect of UIS,” she said. “I get to know more students and faculty and feel comfortable approaching others when I am on a walk to the union or heading to the library. It feels like a second home!” Following graduation, she plans to further her education by applying to a medical school.
Leadership is lived at UIS. Every day.
