Scholarships for History BA Majors and Graduate Students

Chapin Award for Student Research

The Department of History is pleased to offer Chapin Scholarships up to $3,000 to assist students conducting or presenting research. The awards are designed to help meritorious History graduate students and undergraduate students in the History honors program with expenses such as travel, lodging, copying, archive and library fees, purchasing research materials, and other costs directly related to significant research based on primary source materials. Students may also use funds to support their travel to academic conferences to present their research.

The awards are made possible by a generous endowment from Nancy Lanphier and Charles Armstrong Chapin.

How To Apply

Applications are accepted throughout the year. The History Awards Committee will begin review of applications on February 16, 2025, and notify recipients soon after. Funded activities must be completed by June 1, 2025.

Institutional Scholarships

Students pursuing a History BA or MA degrees at UIS are strongly encouraged to apply for institutional scholarships. Last year, UIS gave out over 300 scholarship awards, totaling over $1,000,000. The UIS History Department has scholarship opportunities specifically for both graduate and undergraduate students in History.

How to Apply

To apply for scholarships, students need to complete the universal UIS Scholarship Application, Deadline: February 15.
